The Skinnerbox ”King of Spades and Marmalades” submission has to be one of the more interesting things to come through the Disco Workout mailbag in a while. Skinnerbox is Berlin based techno duo Olaf Hilgenfeld from Berlin and Iftah Gabbai from Jerusalem. Meeting in 2004 and at that time making music by piano, accordion, and whatever else these multi-instrumentalists could get their hands on have moved onto making purely electronic quirky techno. Olaf Hilgenfeld plays Moog synthesizer and Iftah Gabbai plays hardware drum machines and software composing with Max/MSP and Ableton Live. Elle_P is featured as a vocalist on some of their tracks. The Skinnerbox sound is hard to describe with influences ranging from minimal techno, jackin’ house, jazz, and ambient futuristic electronica. Instead of working from loops they develop works from improvised jamming (which may explain their fun and whimsical sound) then later fine tuning with a little post production fun. Their live shows feature gorgeous analog vintage synths and lots of playful energy. Here’s a pic of them performing live:) Notice that lovely Moog they brought along?
