All I Want For Xmas (Is To Get The Band Back Together)

Ahh, bands. Being in one is like dating, but without the sex, or even the cuddling. And if there is sex, it tends not to go over very well among the other band members. Especially when you’re on the road, cooped up in a tiny rental car that you’re paying for, making group decisions that suddenly become you against the couple, and racking up $1000 in parking tickets from fascistic UK meter maids and for which the other band members never bother to sell a single piece of merch to help pay because they’re too busy getting stoned somewhere. This is purely hypothetical of course.
So many things besides musical chops factor into a band functioning pleasantly: different personalities, values, drug habits (or lack thereof). Glen Matlock was rumored to have been kicked out of the Sex Pistols for washing his feet too much. But then that other dude died, and now he’s back. So you see, things change.
And it was precisely in that spirit that I went to the Victorian mansion of Master Slash Slave’s Matt Jones last night to record a song. A paen to his former drummer with whom Matt shared many a crazy cross country tour (I believe they drove for 24 straight hours from Juarez to, like, Chicago once). And for whom, now, he is musically pining, in a totally hetero way.
And yet: it is a love song!
Ladies and gentlemen, here is the sweetest little Holiday electropop ditty you’ll hear this year (semi-produced in 53 minutes last night by moi): “All I Want For Xmas (Is To Get The Band Back Together).”

Matt will be playing bass with me as Luxxury Disco/Tech tonight at the Uptown, 1928 Telegraph in Oakland. It’s Luxxury’s first live gig in the Yay Area since March. Please come.
