Johnatron Edit Wednesday #39

Posted on December 26th, 2007 posted by Johnatron in Edit Wednesday, Uncategorized

I was watching VH1 and stumbled across the best 100 songs of the 90s (where was my daft punk and chemical brothers?). I got rereminded of this song with tons of potential. Sinead, for the record, now has a little bit more hair and four kids because, as I didn’t know, she likes dudes. To get the full effect, listen to the whole thing but watch out for it hit about 2 minutes in.

  1. Wow, that was really great - I will admit I was scared at first by the concept, but it works. The psycho freakout is great!

    (Prince wrote this song, BTW.)

  2. haha this is fucking awesome dude!!

  3. i thought that was terrible, a real bad meaning bad dirge. i’m glad i don’t hear that level of shit very often.

  4. Cool, RCRDLBL.com just called this one of the best remixes of 2007!

So…the dirge dude is outnumbered. Not to mention outclassed.

  5. I’m not a DJ, Musician or Producer, but I have the cultural competence to critique and my goodness, that was a very poor effort. I guess the positive thing from this is that, with easy access to various software eg. Photoshop, Virtual DJ, etc the field is wide open for all to experiment and become cyber-stars. I admire your bravery for posting the track, but I feel the context of the original song is lost through poor insight added by the fact you barely know anything about the artist. Good research always gives extra weight to projects.

    Good luck!

    X

  6. Dear “La Dollar”,

While I did not claim that this remix of mine was the best in the world, it is not a poor effort. No I did not spend days on end doing it. It wasn’t rushed either. If anything I will admit that the mixing is a bit off and I did not master it, which does show. However, “poor effort” is not a phrase I would use to describe this.

What you don’t know, and wouldn’t be expected to know, is
I feel it is in poor taste for you to feel you are the expert on “culture” and what is acceptable. Is it supposed to sound like the the old song? No not really. Sorry if there is too much bass for you or if there shouldn’t be keyboards on this song. My point is you aren’t correct because you CAN’T be correct. Your “cultural competence” (which is the stupidest, most arrogant way to put it) is worth NOTHING because it is subjective.

Research the artist…. why? I’m not going to say “Oh Sinead wouldn’t like this.” I don’t care what she likes. I like her song and I made it so I personally like it better.

Also, I’m not becoming a “cyber star” and using “photoshop” on my songs. I work at my muisc. I didn’t just pick up a computer.

Bravery though? Really it was brave for me to post this song? It wasn’t brave. Usually when we post music we don’t constantly have people berating us and trying to cut it down because most people have enough sense and decencey to know it is just a song. I am not doing a terrible faux-pas and you shouldn’t look at approaching a remix for this song a correct way.

Your “cultural competence” must be off because I got a lot of good feedback instead of pricks over the internet that won’t even leave contact information.

  7. haha

  8. Very nice mix.

Don’t bother to listen to the trolls, they know nothing and probably won’t ever do something half that good in their miserable life. It’s not perfect, but it wasn’t intended to be, Art is all about trial and errors, experimentation that is.

If they can’t understand that, they will never understand art and don’t deserve that you waste a single second of your time explaining them why they sucks.

Nice work, you made that song good again.
