Disco Sunday #22: Let’s Go To The Movies Part Deux

After all, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. What?

As I was putting this together I realized that there is a goldmine of cinematic disco out there. Obvious enough to anyone with cable, but I haven’t owned a TV in a decade so I forgot all about late night movie fromage. Anyway, here’s the first installment of what’s likely to be a running series.

MP3: “Theme from The Warriors” – Barry de Vorzon

MP3: “The Chase” – Giorgio Moroder (from “Midnight Express”) ** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED – KIND OF THE BEST ELECTRONIC SONG EVER

MP3: “Theme From Blade Runner” – Vangelis (the Greek Moroder)

MP3: “Theme From Tron” – Wendy Carlos (née Walter)

MP3: “Football Fight” – Queen (from “Flash Gordon”)

MP3: “Tenebre” – Goblin (aka “The Song Justice Sampled on ‘Phantom’”)

ON A QUICK SIDENOTE: Did you even know that the Grammys have two “Dance/Electronic” categories? Here’s what happened a few hours ago:

BEST DANCE RECORDING
“Do It Again,” The Chemical Brothers
“D.A.N.C.E.,” Justice
“Love Today,” Mika
“Don’t Stop The Music,” Rihanna
And the winner is: “LoveStoned/I Think She Knows,” Justin Timberlake

Good track, to be sure but…in what way did D.A.N.C.E. *not* dominate the electronic music world in 2007? It seems especially unfair to have Timberlake and Rihanna competing in this category as well is in the “normal” best pop/rock record categories. Clearly they’re bigger names by a factor of 100, so why double dip? And what the hell is Mika doing here?

BEST ELECTRONIC/DANCE ALBUM
“†,” Justice
“Sound Of Silver,” LCD Soundsystem
“We Are Pilots,” Shiny Toy Guns
“Elements Of Life,” Tiësto
And the winner is: “We Are The Night,” The Chemical Brothers

I’m not the biggest Shiny Toy Guns fan, though I must confess to being pretty into “Le Disko”…in 2005! It’s amazing they’re still pushing the same record 3 years (and multiple rereleases) later, but I have nothing but respect for them for sticking with it all the way to the Grammys! As for the Chems, I love them but again 2007 was Justice 24/7 in my electro-hood, with lots of LCD in between. So either I slept on that record or the Grammy voters voted for the only name they recognized.

This is a fucking awesome post. The Tenebre track alone is money, let alone the sweet synthed out 80s extras! Keep up the good work!

  • DUDE, thanks for that queen song. You played it for me once and I never knew the name. Glad to have it now. We might need to have a couple more movie themed posts. I got some great input on it too

  • Thanks y’all!

Yeah, this theme has “legs”, as they say. Let’s work it.

  • Couldn’t agree more about “Chase” being the greatest electronic song EVER!!

  • I just downloaded tenebre last week or something because I was all about Dario Argento (Goblin does some of his soundtracks). How weird.

Btw, fuck the grammys. Piece of shit award ceremony. It’s a big leg hump fest.

  • That was a Very good post but what was that about the greek moroder thing?Vangelis is more than a ..greek moroder.you could have a post featuring some of his works with the formings, afrodites child, john etc

  • @ Nikos – I meant it as a compliment, as both are legendary electronic music pioneers. And I talk about Moroder all the time but this is the first time I mentioned Vangelis (who most Americans only know from “Chariots of Fire”), so I thought I’d make a segueway with that connection. Again, intended as flattery. I love the Greece!
