Although I’ve never met the guy, James Pants seems extremely like-able. Probably really funny, doesn’t talk all the time except at the right moments, has some cool cheap thrift-y clothes that all the fashion people (who are supposedly “on top” of that shit) pass right by, and most importantly makes music that references almost every lo-fi and/or cultish genre of music without sounding directly referential. I saw him DJ the lobby of some swanky SF hotel one time in a bathrobe: he casually mixed Sabbath with Aphex Twin, and sang along to his own tunes here and there during the set. His vocals sounded harsh and out of tune, and that made everything even more endearing. AND…he’s prolific, I mean the dude churns out albums and EPs at a very alarming rate, and even his un-used demos are more like-able than most other producer’s top tunes. He collects weird ass records and shares tracks online (what a concept!). Check the James Pants Tumblr for examples.
In my book the guy really can do no wrong. The following track was lifted from the James Pants Hotel Collection, a 7-star collection for business travelers, high flyers, and power-movers, which you can download from the Red Bull Music Academy Soundcloud Page.
