Disco Sunday #34: Clean Stuff Devin Dirt Is Listening To

Devin knew he’d regret the hat. But he wore it anyway because it was 2003.

Devin Dirt lives in Brooklyn and keeps threatening to return to California. We threw some MP3s back and forth the other day of stuff we’re hella into now and he sent me a few gems I thought would be perfect for today.

If you’ve ever been outside the USA it’s almost certain you’ve heard this first song on the radio. “Voyage Voyage” was released in 1986 and (aside from France, Desireless’ homeland, in which it peaked at #2) was #1 all over the world: from Germany to Greece, and even in Lebanon and Thailand. Haunting and evocative, avec un tout petit peu de fromage, its become something of an international synthpop treasure.

Naked Eyes are best known for their Burt Bacharach via Carpenters cover “Always Something There to Remind Me.” This lesser known single from their debut album is new to my ears and is totally sugarpop irresistable.

Do you like Yes but find their whiny vocals and everchanging time signatures insufficiently white and adolescent? Then you’ll love the prog-rock lite that is St. Louis, MO also-rans Starcastle!

What’s so awesome about Devin is that he’s got a sugary sweet melodic sensibility and yet the shit he produces is so fucking hard. Go download his tracks on Beatport and one of his live sets at A Brooklyn Life. Then hit him on on his Myspace and threaten to hold a hunger strike until he returns to music making. Because the world needs more of Devin’s sonic dirt.

  • insufficiently white and adolescent – surely you meant excessively white and adolescent?

  • No, I meant insufficiently – as in “if the music of Yes just isn’t ‘white’ enough for you, wait’ll ya hear Starcastle!”
