Right before I left SF for LA, where I am now and will be for a little while, I had to change my diet drastically overnight. It’s hard to overstate how major the emotional repercussions of this ostensibly simple physical change have been. Imagine if one day you suddenly were told: no more bread, no more milk/cheese/ice cream, no more coffee, no more beer! And the list goes on. It’s a bit traumatic when you are accustomed to having endless options, to suddenly have very few. I was, in a word, pretty morose.

I’m getting used to it, but when it was all going down a few months ago there were two songs I listened to over and over again. The first one was a track I originally found on 20JazzFunkGreats, which is quite simply the 2nd best blog that was ever made. It got to me so much that I was compelled to do a basic re-edit. This was as much an effort to make it more mix-friendly as it was an attempt to attach myself to the song itself, since my connection to the feeling that, indeed, my systems were/are breaking down was so deep. I know that sounds weird, but dammit, I am an ARTISTE, and this blog is my canvas…ok, now I’m even irritating myself. To the music:

The second song, like its title, sounds like rainy, self-absorbed, adolescent misery, as voiced by a bummed out robot. The Hasbeens are a collaboration between Hague disco king Alden Tyrell and Dj Overdose (of Novamen), and as the lyrics reveal themselves after a few listens, this song really gets under your skin.

Now just to be sure about my position on being an overly dramatic dickhead, please know that I am categorically opposed. There’s an article on suicide in the New York Times magazine today, please read it. And I lost two incredibly important friends a year ago this week. So listen to the music but don’t fucking kill yourself.
