Plastic emotions run deep

The video for Visage’s 1981 classic “Fade to Grey” is one of the creepiest things I have ever seen. It’s beautifully epic as they walk out of the car into the building with placid faces and pristine makeup. I’m totally enamored by the absolute obsession with aesthetics in this video. Everything is calculated and well delivered, from the transitions, to make up, to the ghostly images. It’s almost borderline necrophiliac, as its wreaks of sexuality and death.

Stephen Strange*, the lead vocalist, ran the door at one of the most glitzy new-romantic clubs in England in 1979 (Blitz) and his flare for british glamour pulsates in this video. I think Fade to Grey is due for a neo-synth remix.

  1. agreed.. Visage were audio/visual geniuses! although his name is STEVE STRANGE!!
if you can hunt ‘em down (there out there on the interwebs) the b-sides and 12” mixes from 79-82 are mindblowingly delicious!
