Flock of Seagulls exists outside of introduction. They wrote such epic classics as “A Space Age Love Song” and “I Ran,” but their 1981 track “Modern Love is Automatic” shines as an experimental-yet emo gem. The track merges futuristic synth with a new romantic twist on punk.

The track VCL XI, off of Organisation (1980), warbles my mind. Seriously. Sometimes it sounds like the song is mixing clanking toy keyboards with vacuums and breaking pianos. It creates an overall vision of cheerful machines being engulfed in black shadows. It’s way too classy for 1980.
