There was such a thing as “Art Disco” ?

Are you ready to be blown away… hollyyy shit. When I first saw this I thought the creators of the universe must love me for blessing me with this fine piece of dancing energy. Never in my youtube life have I seen such overwhelmingly poetic disco dancing. I think what really seals the deal is the synchronicity of forty plus neon covered dancers.

“Rico Mambo” by the Breakfast Club has been consuming me the last two weeks. The way the rhythm slinks up and down alongside the vocals makes it impossible not to dance around your living room. The elements of cha-cha just add to its kitschy flavor and create a full world of avante disco. When I looked up the Breakfast Club I found two odd facts… First, Madonna was in the group for a brief moment in the early 80’s.

Second, I read under Amazon’s “editorial description” that “Rico Mambo” was featured on “Dancing in the Face of Adversity” compilation by Island Records because it was part of the art-disco scene. For reals, that is a grand merger. The New York “art scene” and elements of disco ? It’s musical category is kind of unimportant though because I just plain fucking love the song.

Then there’s Kid Creole and the Coconuts who created quite an eccentric disco track in 1982 with “Annie I’m Not Your Daddy.” The song is part experimental, part pop and part Caribbean, but exudes an undeniably catchy dance vibe. Combined with the blunt lyrics of paternity denial I’m not quite sure how you can pass this one up.
