Some of my favorite BUFFETLIBRE REWIND tracks

Before I list off some of my favorites I just have to mention how much I loathe 3oh!3. Only once every three thousand years do I drink the haterade on this blog, but I just have to say it’s some of the worst shit I’ve ever heard in my life. I turned on MTV just five minutes ago and was pretty much overtaken by some shit-tastic “electronic / thrash ” that they told me was 3oh!3… the track was titled “Don’t Trust Me.” Maybe I’m full of shit, I mean if you think this is just fucking amazing and I’m an asshole please let me know. I don’t care. That’s fine. I’m just saying, I’d rather swim through a pool of cow shit with my mouth open than have to hear it again. K thanks! Onto the major love-fest.

Electric Youth’s cover of “Lying Still” is so perky! The original has a lovely melody, but could probably be played while you got your teeth cleaned. Austin’s percolating blend of crunchy and cutesy synths perfectly compliment Bronwyn’s lush yet girly vocals. The new energy Electric Youth gives to this soft rock classic is massively enjoyable and manages to capture that mid eighties giddiness beautifully.

Dan Hartman’s “Relight My Fire” would make any grandma swoon. It sounds like spoons playing on a xylophone and that, well, was pretty fucking hip in 1978. But, it’s no longer 1978 and though we love that shit Miami Horror has tore up this disco classic with his epic remix. Basically Miami Horror took the amazing sappy slowness of Relight My Fire and turned it into a disco-club-banger complete with gut wrenching bass and strings. Not an Ed Banger-Banger, but a swing your hips and do cartwheels across the disco floor banger. It’s fun as shit!!

Okay time for the slow-dance wind down as we move into Amiina’s poignant cover of OMD’s Souvenir. I have nothing but absolute dedication to the church of OMD, so for me having someone cover them is pretty impossible. They’re just, sooo… brilliant. But, Amiina has created a somber, almost heart-breakingly Kate Bush-esque cover that has a romantic aura. It’s slightly simpler than the original and nothing beats OMD’s bleak soundtracks, but I’m quite satisfied with Amiina’s delicate take on this classic.

  1. I watched that 3OH!3 music video on their site. You are not an asshole. It’s trash. It’s like “electronic/thrash” aimed at 12 year-old fans of Good Charlotte and My Chemical Romance. And it’s funny how the lyric “do the Helen Keller” is vaguely reminiscent of “do the Jane Fonda.” Geeze… somebody wash my eyes out with soap and shoot me in the face…

  2. as much as I love OMD
    I felt Amilina’s version didn’t do much.
    Not that I hated it, but it’s “twee-indie” sound was predictable.

    Now that Johnny Hates Jazz redux was very amusing ……………..in a good way :)

  3. Love Amiina. They just SOUND like Iceland.

    And I hate that I had to go look up 3Oh3 and actually listen to it and watch about 20 seconds of that video. So overall, you’re even, good for putting up the OMD cover, bad for even pointing out that horrible 303 stuff exists. I’m sure the blog will end up being up for the night though.
    cheers

  4. @Drew

    @DC
