The Turtles were a surf-rock-turned-folk-rock-turned-pop band formed in LA in the mid 60’s. After a Byrds-like turn making the top 40 with a Dylan cover, in 1967 they went all the way to #1 with “Happy Together”. Co-written by Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon, the song knocked the Beatles’ “Penny Lane” off the top of the charts for three weeks. Band co-founders/vocalists Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman went on to sing backing vocals on a number of songs, notably T. Rex’s “Get it On (Bang A Going)” and Bruce Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart.” Last but certainly not least, their victorious lawsuit against De La Soul for using a Turtles sample on Three Feet High and Rising’s “Transmitting Live from Mars” helped set the precedent for copyright law – namely, that if you get caught sampling, you’re gonna pay. Relatively speaking, De La got off easy; at least they didn’t get totally Verved.

    Loved the turtles remix. I’ve been a huge fan of artists breathing in new life into the classics since i bought my first verve remix cd.
