Enya is Your Mom, but Made of Magic

I am sitting at Casbah Cafe in Silver Lake, Los Angeles surrounded by bloggers, musicians, screenplay writers and the like. In the background, an Enya CD is playing with no apparent irony. After my initial shock at the apparent juxtaposition wore off, I started thinking about whether there’s more to meets the ear about Enya than her being half “Lord of The Rings” trailer and half feminine hygiene commercial.
A closer look reveals that there are aspects of Enya that are not that far removed from many of our most revered female Indie artists. She dwells alone in the towers of a remote musical castle with an army of partially tamed cold, masculine music machines like Kate. She builds nonsense syllables into intergalactically reverb-bathed stacks of harmony like her melismatic twin Elisabeth. She is at once the enigmatic, mystical faerie pixie sister of Bjork and the twirling dervish of witchy mystery of her cocaine hippie American cousin Stevie. And of course, she shares the blood, history and medieval celtic goddessness of her Irish confrere Sinead, albeit without all the crazy.
But as close as Enya’s vocal stylings or her overall sound may at times resemble some of the aforementioned women, unlike all of them there is nothing dirty, erotic, dangerous or imperfect about her. Enya is not your lover: she is the idealized mother figure, perfectly embodying the pristine, pure, sexless virginity of Mary, floating in the amniotic oceans of Yemaya.
And your mother transcends coolness, does she not? So too does Enya who, it turns out, is also shockingly under-blogged. DiscoWorkout wants to proffer an essential piece of her oeuvre to you now to rectify this. Listen while holding your best healing crystals to your temples and chanting in Gaelic and you will become one with Kali, Anu, Gaia and Shakti.

Love her. How about Storms In Africa? So good. If I’m not mistaken its used in the scene in Happy Gilmore where he thinks of his “happy place”.

Bummer. I was expecting a Baron Von Luxxury remix of Enya. Perhaps it is to come? I always told Johnatron he should remix Miley Cyrus, this would be the next best/most unexpected thing.

@ CWV - I totally agree, Johnatron is due for a comeback soon, and Enya would just be the perfect dolphin for him to ride out of his deep ocean lair.
@ SeanDon - I gotta go rent that DVD, I expect there will be new layers of wisdom hitherto unremarked upon. Like the NYT crossword puzzle answers Tobias drops in every third sentence on “Arrested Development.” It was only after watching 43 episodes in a row on Hulu while sick for 2 weeks that I noticed this.
@ TheGBH - Not kidding.

Have you checked out the new CD/DVD The Very Best of Enya? It came out 12/1/2009. 22 tracks on audio CD and 16 video/documentaries. Tracks are remastered and hand picked by Enya! There’s a link to a video from the DVD. Since Enya is so underblogged, you can embed the video into your blogs, websites and posts. Help spread the word! http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid4020141001/?bctid=ref:A10302B0000121411Y
