Disco Sunday-ish #50: Slice Me Nice

Sometimes you like a song so much you want to eat it. I have a feeling that German schlag-meister Manfred Alois Perilano aka “Fancy” was such a fan of Bobby Orlando, and specifically The Flirts‘ song “Passion”, that he said “fuck it - I’m just going to bite this track wholesale. Except instead of being three sexy girls singing about passion, I’m a creepy Teutonic guy in a Michael Jackson jacket comparing eating pastries to having sex.”

And thus was begotten 1984’s “Slice Me Nice”:

Sure, lots of people borrowed the patented Bobby O. hi-NRG synthbass, cheese organ, and drum machine. Most damningly though (besides the 95% similar chord changes), compare the synth pad that comes in at 0:16 in the Fancy song above with the synth pad that comes in at 0:40 in the Flirts song below (which you may remember from Disco Sunday #26):

Just sayin’.

Our friends in Sugar and Gold recently did a fantastic, faithful cover that manages to replace some of the original silliness with actual sex appeal:

I don’t know about you, but now that I’ve listened to the song three times I have a strange urge to put cake down my pants. Gotta run.

    6. That’s some major bullshit. As a Bobby O purist, I am offended!

    7. But, but, Bobby “O” was well-known for rehashing songs, New Order’s “Blue Monday” being the most notorious example (Divine’s “Love Reaction”)..I’m sure he even tried taking New Order to court for plagiarism!). Just saying.

I think Bobby is a God, and even Gods have feet of clay :)

Didn’t like his newer stuff much though. Except for the remix of “Sorrow”.
