Nu-Disco Theory: Electronica in a Postmodern Landscape

I’m taking another break from the textbooks. I’m about to go make an egg and some toast, but first I wanted to share my latest disco-obsessions. Only two tracks for the time being, but they are really fucking good songs. I’ve had my headphones on for the last nine hours listening to them in loops (while reading about GE’s toxic dumping and tax credits, sweet).

Firstly, Livyo finally released “Quark.” Oh my fucking god. I thought I would never get a copy of this track. I had been listening to it on either his myspace or on youtube for the last ninety two years. I swear. The song is one of the most intense nu-disco ballads I have heard thus far. Of course, you probably have heard Livyo’s funked out remix of “Girls Are Dressed To Kill,” but nothing compares to the whirling acid trip of “Quark.” I’m not going to say it’s far better, that would be untrue, but it is simply a divine disco gem in its own dimension. I think at this moment you can’t find a more intense disco-house production that sticks to such whimsical charms.

Nexxxxt!! Is Siriusmo’s “High Together.” This song is like the dirtiest-cutesy conglomeration of funk I have heard in quite a while. Don’t be turned off by the dirty adjective because I know how much that word gets over-used in wannabe seedy electro clubs, but this track is gorgeously funky. The guy has a penchant for bright yet suicidal club music. I posted about Siriusmo last year (here, here) and I am even more head over heels with him this year than last. He is constantly putting out super great shit.

    Thanks for posting the Siriusmo track! I love that guy’s music sooooo much! I’ve been dying to hear something new from him!

  • Really digging that new Siriusmo track more than I thought I would based on what I remember of his older material. He’s always surprising. Is that a Stereolab sample at the beginning of the track? It sounds like maybe that cover they did of “One Note Samba”?

  • Dear sweet zombie jesus.. Siriusmo is a fucking genius! “High Together” is a braingasm and a half. It definitely has made the top spot for track of the week, and his upcoming album will be just as eagerly anticipated as the forthcoming Daft Punk magnum opus. Lets hope they both remix one another.. that would make my year.
